Pull marin Babord Tribord — les coudières au code des marins

Bâbord is port, the left-hand side of the boat; tribord is starboard, the right — when facing forward, towards the bow. At night, a red light marks port and a green light starboard: it is the first reflex every sailor learns before casting off.

The memory trick taught in sailing schools: the French word “batterie” (battery). Read from left to right, BA(t) for bâbord on the left, TRI(e) for tribord on the right. And for the colours: red to port, green to starboard.
